With the historic election of Republican Scott Brown in Massachusetts last Tuesday, the American people look forward to the midterm elections in 2010.

With Americans wary of an unpopular Congress, an unfavorable president and destructive policies of both, the GOP is poised to make a comeback of extraordinary lengths, focused specifically on returning the country back to its roots of small government and individual freedom.

In an article in the Belmont Citizen-Herald of Belmont, Mass., Republican gubernatorial candidate Charles Baker explained that he and other candidates feel empowered by Brown’s win and that the victory changes the landscape of American politics.

“And I think we’re going to see a bunch of really good, regular local people jump into a bunch of these rep and Senate and congressional races. And they’ll be real candidates, because they’re going to be talking the same stuff voters wanted people to be talking about in this race, which is: what are you going to do about getting people back to work, and will you please stop spending my money like it’s my money, instead of like it’s your money,” Baker explained.

This sense is not limited to partisan stumping on the Right. Julian E. Zelizer, a professor of history and public affairs at Princeton University, echoed these sentiments in a special to CNN.

“This could very well just be a taste of things to come,” Zelizer said. “Most likely, the midterm elections won’t be good for the Democrats.”

Early polling indicates that the forecasts of both Zelizer and Baker could come true. According to Rasmussen’s Generic Congressional Ballot, the average American would vote for a Republican over a Democrat in any house race, 45 percent to 37 percent. Rasmussen reports that “Republicans have been ahead by nine points—their largest lead in several years—while support for Democrats has fallen to its lowest level in years.”
